Several members of Iru Ekun, the private security outfit linked to Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, were reportedly injured after an operation against suspected armed criminals turned into a fierce gun battle inside the Old Oyo National Park in Oyo State.
According to reports, the operatives had entered the forest to track and flush out suspected kidnappers and other armed groups believed to be operating within the area.
Sources said the security team first deployed surveillance drones to identify suspected criminal hideouts before advancing into the forest. However, the operation reportedly took a dramatic turn when heavily armed men, believed to be members of cross-border criminal networks, ambushed the operatives and opened fire.
The attack triggered an intense exchange of gunfire deep inside the forest, leaving several Iru Ekun members reportedly wounded. As of the time of this report, the exact number of injured operatives has not been officially confirmed.
Despite the surprise attack, the security outfit reportedly fought back, although the number of casualties among the suspected attackers remains unknown.
The Old Oyo National Park and surrounding forest corridors have become major security flashpoints in recent years, with repeated reports of kidnapping, armed attacks and other violent crimes.
The latest incident comes amid growing concerns over worsening insecurity in parts of Oyo State, following recent attacks on schools and communities by armed gangs.
