A Lagos-based man, identified as Emeka Joseph, has been remanded in the Kirikiri Correctional Centre after being arraigned over allegations of domestic violence and assault against his 18-year-old partner.

The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the development following public outrage sparked by a viral video and photographs showing the young woman with visible facial injuries.

According to a statement released by the police, investigations revealed that the victim, Ezeka Chisom, allegedly suffered physical assault while living with the suspect.

Police authorities stated that preliminary findings confirmed the victim sustained injuries to her face during the incident. Following his arrest, Joseph was charged before a court and subsequently remanded pending further legal proceedings.

The case attracted widespread attention on social media after disturbing images and videos allegedly showing the victim’s injuries circulated online, prompting calls for justice from concerned Nigerians and human rights advocates.

Reports indicate that the young woman, said to be from Ebonyi State, had been living with the suspect in Lagos. Neighbours reportedly raised concerns over what they described as repeated signs of abuse and maltreatment. However, the suspect allegedly dismissed their complaints and warned them against interfering in his personal affairs.

The Lagos State Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting victims of domestic violence and ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice.

The matter has been adjourned until August 3, 2026, when court proceedings are expected to continue.

The case has once again sparked conversations about domestic violence, the protection of vulnerable persons, and the need for timely intervention when signs of abuse are observed.
