The Presidency has pushed back against growing claims of widespread hunger and economic hardship across Nigeria, insisting that many citizens are benefiting from the reforms and development projects introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Presidential Spokesman Bayo Onanuga argued that the level of hunger frequently highlighted by critics does not accurately reflect the situation across the country.
According to Onanuga, several government initiatives, including major road projects, student loan programmes, and low-interest credit facilities for workers, are improving the lives of Nigerians despite concerns over rising inflation, food prices, and the cost of living.
He pointed to newly constructed road infrastructure, including routes connecting parts of Ogun and Lagos States, as evidence of the administration’s commitment to development. He also cited the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, claiming it has significantly reduced travel time for many residents.
Onanuga further defended the Federal Government’s student loan scheme, stating that thousands of families are benefiting from interest-free educational loans designed to ease the financial burden on parents and students.
The presidential aide also highlighted affordable loan programmes for civil servants, describing them as part of broader efforts to support workers and stimulate economic growth.
While acknowledging that Nigerians face economic challenges, Onanuga maintained that positive developments are often overlooked in public discussions about the country’s economy.
He stressed that the administration remains focused on delivering projects and policies aimed at improving the welfare of citizens, adding that his personal observations do not support claims that hunger has reached the scale frequently portrayed in public debates.
The remarks come amid continuing national conversations about inflation, food affordability, economic reforms, and the overall impact of government policies on ordinary Nigerians.
