Fear and panic gripped travellers along the Old Oyo National Park axis in Oyo State on Sunday after a suspected terrorist attack was reported near the reserve, forcing several commuters to alter their journeys.
One of the travellers who narrowly escaped the incident recounted the frightening experience, saying they received information about the attack moments before arriving at the park.
According to the witness, the group was heading toward the Old Oyo National Park at about 11:30 a.m. when they received a phone call warning that armed men suspected to be bandits had launched an attack within the reserve area.
“We were just minutes away from the park when we got the call. Shortly afterward, an Amotekun patrol vehicle sped past us,” the traveller said.
The witness added that the security vehicle later stopped in Igbeti, where travellers approached the operatives to verify the report. An Amotekun officer reportedly confirmed that an attack had occurred but declined to provide further details, noting that security personnel were mobilising to respond to the situation.
The incident has heightened fears among residents and road users, coming on the heels of recent security concerns in Oyo State, including the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Orire Local Government Area.
Security agencies, including operatives of the Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun Corps), are said to be monitoring developments and intensifying efforts to track those responsible.
Sources also revealed that another violent incident occurred near the park on Friday, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to another.
The Old Oyo National Park, which spans parts of Oyo and Kwara states, has increasingly come under security scrutiny due to reports that criminal groups exploit the vast forest terrain as operational hideouts.
When contacted, Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed awareness of reports surrounding the incident and stated that an official statement would be issued after a full assessment of the situation.
Authorities have urged residents and travellers to remain vigilant as investigations continue.
