The management of Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Ayingba, Kogi State, has confirmed the arrest of two students allegedly connected to the killing of a fellow undergraduate, identified as David Ocholi Solomon, a 300-level Biochemistry student.
The arrests were disclosed by the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Salisu Usman Ogbo, during a condolence visit to the deceased student’s family in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, the suspects were apprehended by the university’s internal security team shortly after the incident and subsequently handed over to law enforcement authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Professor Ogbo described the killing as a heartbreaking tragedy that has thrown the entire university community into mourning.
“The suspects were arrested by the university’s internal security personnel and have been handed over to the appropriate law enforcement agency for further investigation and prosecution,” he stated.
The Vice-Chancellor revealed that he received news of the student’s death while attending the 35th Annual National Conference and Convention of the Nigerian Political Science Association at the University of Ibadan.
He assured the family and the public that the institution is working closely with security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation and to identify all individuals involved in the crime.
Reaffirming the university’s zero-tolerance stance on cultism, violence, and criminal activities, Professor Ogbo said the institution would continue to strengthen security measures across the campus and surrounding communities to prevent similar incidents.
He also acknowledged the support of Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, traditional rulers, and security agencies in maintaining peace around the university environment.
Responding on behalf of the family, the deceased’s father, Solomon Idachaba, commended the university management for its swift response and support during the difficult period. He, however, urged authorities to ensure that everyone responsible for his son’s death is brought to justice.
The incident has sparked fresh concerns about student safety and security within tertiary institutions across Nigeria, with many calling for stronger measures to curb violence and criminal activities on campuses.
