A wave of shock has swept through Plateau State following the gruesome killing of a 62-year-old community leader whose lifeless body was discovered with multiple machete wounds in Riyom Local Government Area.
The deceased, identified as Joshua Bulus, the Mai-Anguwa (Village Head) of Dyein community, was reportedly found dead on the outskirts of the village after security operatives responded to an emergency report from residents.
According to security sources, troops of Operation Safe Haven arrived at the scene at approximately 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday after receiving information about a body discovered near the community.
Preliminary findings revealed that Bulus sustained several machete-inflicted injuries, suggesting he was violently attacked by unknown assailants while carrying out his routine night patrol duties aimed at protecting the community.
Security officials believe criminal elements may have been responsible for the killing, although investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the attack and identify those involved.
Authorities have since launched an intensive manhunt for the perpetrators, while troops have increased their presence in the area to prevent further security breaches and reassure residents.
The killing has heightened concerns over the security situation in parts of Plateau State, where communities continue to face threats from armed criminals and violent attacks.
Residents described the late village head as a respected leader who dedicated himself to maintaining peace and security within the community.
Meanwhile, the tragic incident comes amid rising insecurity across Nigeria’s North-Central region.
In a related development, reports have emerged that five worshippers abducted during an attack on an Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) congregation in Omugo, Oro Ago District of Kwara State, have reportedly died in captivity.
Among those feared dead is the wife of the church’s minister, Pastor Omole. Community sources disclosed that information regarding the deaths came from one of the abductees who reportedly escaped from the kidnappers’ hideout and later narrated the ordeal.
The latest incidents have renewed calls for stronger security measures and swift action by authorities to tackle the growing threat of violence, kidnappings, and attacks on rural communities across the country.
As investigations continue, residents of Dyein community are demanding justice for their slain traditional leader and enhanced protection for vulnerable communities in Plateau State.
