A civil society organisation, Nigeria Democratic Rights Advocacy (NDRA), has called for an urgent investigation into what it describes as a serious electoral irregularity involving Barrister and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a statement released on Sunday, the group raised concerns over Egwuaba’s alleged simultaneous listing as National Legal Adviser for both the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on the official records of .
According to NDRA, one of the listings was reportedly marked “by court order,” a development the group says raises significant legal and constitutional questions.
The statement, signed by the group’s General Secretary, Julius Aondowase, described the situation as more than a mere administrative error, warning that it could amount to a breach of Nigeria’s Electoral Act.
Citing provisions of the amended law, the group emphasised that dual membership of political parties is strictly prohibited and punishable by a fine of up to ₦10 million or a prison term of up to two years, or both.
NDRA stressed that the position of National Legal Adviser is a key role within a party’s National Executive Committee, requiring full and exclusive loyalty to a single political party.
“Occupying such a sensitive office in two different political parties simultaneously is not only improper but constitutes prima facie evidence of dual membership,” the group stated.
The organisation called for immediate clarification from all parties involved, insisting that if the records are accurate, it represents a clear violation of the law. However, if the listings are incorrect, NDRA demanded a prompt correction and explanation from INEC.
The group further urged electoral authorities and relevant institutions to launch a thorough investigation into the matter and ensure accountability.
“Political parties must not become safe havens for legal contradictions. The rule of law must be upheld without exception,” the statement added.
NDRA concluded by stressing that Nigeria’s democratic system must be guided by strict adherence to legal provisions, warning against any form of institutional compromise.
