Fear and chaos have gripped in after heavily armed, masked gunmen invaded the area, forcing residents—including women and children—to flee into surrounding bushes for safety.
The violent attack, which reportedly began on April 27, has left the once-bustling community largely deserted, with sustained gunfire sending villagers into hiding.
Local sources allege that the assault is being led by a suspected figure identified as Dominic Edobor, alongside a group of armed men who have since taken control of the area. As of Saturday, the attackers were said to remain in the community, turning it into what residents describe as a “ghost town.”
At least nine people have reportedly sustained severe gunshot injuries, while many others remain displaced without access to shelter or medical care.
Residents who spoke under anonymity expressed deep frustration, accusing the of failing to act despite prior warnings about the impending attack.
“We informed the police before the invasion, but nothing was done. Now our people are suffering in the bushes,” one resident lamented.
The crisis is believed to be linked to a leadership dispute over the Okaeghele (youth leadership position) within the community, with allegations of a controversial figure attempting to enforce authority through violence and intimidation.
Efforts to reach the Edo State Police Command spokesperson were unsuccessful, as official communication channels were reportedly unreachable. However, a senior officer indicated that the situation is “being monitored.”
For now, displaced residents remain stranded in nearby forests, exposed to harsh conditions, while calls grow louder for urgent intervention from security agencies and government authorities.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns over rural insecurity and delayed response by law enforcement in parts of Nigeria.
