SUNTV GLOBAL: Gunmen Kill Driver, Abduct Passengers In Fresh Edo Highway Attack

Fresh violence has been recorded along Nigeria’s highways as gunmen ambushed a commercial bus on the Benin-Ore Expressway in , killing the driver and abducting several passengers.

The attack reportedly occurred around midnight and targeted a Toyota Hummer bus belonging to Ibom Express Executive Travels Ltd. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the armed attackers opened fire on the moving vehicle, forcing the driver to lose control before the bus veered off the road into a ditch.

A survivor who escaped the attack said the bus had departed from and picked up additional passengers in before running into the ambush.

Video footage from the scene showed the lifeless body of the driver inside the bullet-riddled vehicle. Three passengers—two men and one woman—reportedly managed to escape by fleeing into nearby bushes, while others were taken away by the gunmen.

The female survivor was seen in visible distress, as her mother was among those abducted during the attack. Witnesses at the scene described the incident as traumatic, with survivors struggling to come to terms with the violence.

Residents in the area revealed that this was not an isolated case, noting that a similar attack had occurred at the same location just days earlier, where another driver was killed and passengers kidnapped.

The incident adds to growing concerns over insecurity on major highways, particularly in the South-South region, where kidnapping for ransom has become increasingly frequent.

In a related incident, authorities had earlier confirmed that a driver was killed and passengers abducted along the Lagos–Benin Expressway, further highlighting the persistent threat faced by commuters.

As of the time of filing this report, the in Edo State had yet to issue an official statement regarding the latest attack, raising further concerns among residents and travellers over safety on the roads.
