In a bold move to secure its waters and protect vital economic assets, the has launched a large-scale maritime operation across the , deploying 10 warships, two helicopters, and elite special forces.
The operation, codenamed Exercise Obangame Express 2026, was officially flagged off aboard the Nigerian Navy Ship KADA in Onne, Rivers State, under the leadership of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas.
Represented by Rear Admiral P. E. Effah, Abbas described the exercise as a critical multinational effort aimed at strengthening maritime security and tackling rising threats such as piracy, sea robbery, illegal arms trafficking, drug smuggling, and crude oil theft.
According to naval authorities, the deployment includes advanced surveillance systems and specially trained Special Boat Service operatives, tasked with executing high-risk missions including vessel boarding, search-and-seizure operations, and search-and-rescue drills.
Regional Security Boost
Originally launched in 2010 by the in partnership with African navies, Obangame Express has grown into one of the most significant security collaborations in West and Central Africa. This year’s exercise focuses heavily on intelligence sharing, operational coordination, and improving response strategies to evolving maritime threats.
Rear Admiral C. D. Okehie, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Naval Command, emphasized the urgency of the mission, noting that Nigeria’s maritime domain—rich in oil and other resources—remains a prime target for criminal networks.

The Gulf of Guinea is one of the world’s most important shipping corridors, serving as a key route for global trade. However, it has also become a hotspot for piracy, illegal fishing, and oil theft—activities that continue to threaten both national and international economic stability.
