Fresh details have emerged surrounding the killing of Brigadier-General Oseni Braimah, the Nigerian Army commander who died during a deadly terrorist attack on the 29 Task Force Brigade Headquarters in Benisheikh, Borno State.
According to new accounts, the senior military officer was reportedly on a phone call with his twin brother based in the United Kingdom at the exact moment the attack began, in what has now been described as his final conversation.
The incident occurred during a midnight assault on April 9, 2026, when armed terrorists stormed the military base, killing the senior officer and several soldiers.
Family sources revealed that the twins shared a very close bond and spoke almost daily, often late at night. On the night of the attack, they were said to be speaking shortly after midnight when the conversation was abruptly cut off.
“It was their usual late-night call. Suddenly, the line went dead, and repeated attempts to reconnect failed,” a family source said.
The relative added that the twin brother remained awake for hours, repeatedly calling and sending messages, unaware that the attack was already underway.
“By 4 a.m., he was still trying to reach him. By 6:30 a.m., we received the devastating call from the military confirming the attack and the loss of lives,” the source added.
The officer’s death has intensified concerns over the security situation in Nigeria’s North-East, where military formations have continued to face repeated attacks from insurgent groups.
Brig. Gen. Braimah, an Edo State-born officer, was later laid to rest alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, with military honours.
In response to the tragedy, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo announced full educational scholarships for the officer’s three children, pledging support up to university level as a gesture of honour and state responsibility.
Military records show that the late General had a distinguished career, serving in key command positions, instructional roles, and international peacekeeping missions before his death.
Security analysts say the attack highlights ongoing vulnerabilities in military installations across the North-East, despite continued counter-insurgency operations.
