Pressure is mounting on the Nigerian Army as the Socialist Workers League (SWL) has called for an independent investigation into allegations of sexual harassment, intimidation, and victimisation against a senior military officer, General S.O. Okoigi.
The call follows claims made by former Army nurse, Matilda Anighoro, who accused the senior officer of making repeated sexual advances which she allegedly rejected, leading to what she described as sustained persecution and her eventual resignation from service.
In a statement jointly signed by its National Chairperson, Kelvin Ayemhenre, and Secretary, Amara Nwosu, the group said the case reflects a broader pattern of alleged abuse and institutional silence within the military. According to SWL, Anighoro’s resignation process was delayed for months, while her terminal benefits are yet to be paid.
Anighoro alleged that after refusing the officer’s advances multiple times, she became a target of intimidation and punitive actions, including threats of deployment to difficult locations and denial of access to senior authorities when she attempted to seek intervention.
The group also raised concerns over the credibility of internal military investigations, arguing that such processes often fail to deliver justice, especially in cases involving senior officers. It cited the case of Ruth Ogunleye, where similar allegations were dismissed following an internal probe, and the complainant was subsequently discharged from service.
SWL insisted that only an independent investigation can ensure accountability and restore public confidence, stressing that continued silence from authorities could embolden further misconduct. The group urged civil society organisations, labour unions, and women’s rights advocates to demand justice and push for reforms within the system.
Reacting to the allegations, General Okoigi denied any wrongdoing, stating that he never made sexual advances toward Anighoro. He further claimed that the former corporal had disciplinary issues and had previously been held in the guardroom over alleged misconduct.
The case, which was initially brought to public attention by the Elegant Nurses Forum, has continued to generate debate over accountability, gender rights, and the treatment of whistleblowers within Nigeria’s armed forces.
As of the time of this report, there has been no official confirmation of an independent investigation by military authorities.
