As political realignments gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has revealed that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus presidential candidate before considering primaries.
Speaking during a Prime Time interview on Arise TV, Atiku said party leaders are determined to avoid internal conflicts by reaching a unified agreement on who should fly the party’s flag.
“As far as the party is concerned, we will aim at consensus. If we don’t get it, then we move to an election,” he stated.
According to him, the ADC is working with experienced political figures who understand the importance of unity, expressing confidence that disagreements would be resolved without crisis.
Atiku stressed that the party’s broader mission goes beyond individual ambition, describing the coalition’s goal as a collective effort to “save Nigeria’s democracy.”
In a notable show of flexibility, the former presidential candidate declared his willingness to step aside for any aspirant who emerges through a credible process—even if it means backing other strong contenders like Peter Obi.
“I will step aside for any winner. If he is a contender, why not?” Atiku said.
He further assured that he would fully respect the outcome of either a consensus agreement or a democratic primary, emphasizing that party unity remains the top priority.
The development signals intensifying coalition-building among opposition figures, as members across major political parties continue to align ahead of what is expected to be a fiercely contested 2027 election.
With talks ongoing behind closed doors, the ADC’s strategy could play a decisive role in shaping the opposition’s strength—and possibly redefine Nigeria’s political landscape in the coming years.
