A fresh storm has erupted in Nigeria’s security debate as human rights lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor accuses the Nigerian Government of deliberately shielding violent terrorist groups while targeting the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to divert attention from escalating bloodshed across the country.
In a strongly worded statement titled “Hypocrisy at Its Peak: The Dangerous Diversion from Nigeria’s Real Enemies,” Ejiofor alleged that authorities are ignoring the activities of deadly insurgent groups while focusing national discourse on IPOB.
According to him, armed groups including Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province—alongside violent elements posing as herdsmen—have continued to unleash terror across multiple regions with devastating consequences.
“Their attacks are relentless and target both security institutions and defenceless citizens,” Ejiofor said, pointing to ongoing violence in the North-West, North-Central, North-East, and the Middle Belt.
He lamented that despite the scale of killings and destruction, public attention is being “manipulated” away from what he described as the country’s real security threats.
Ejiofor further argued that labeling IPOB—a group he described as non-violent and globally present—as a terrorist financier is a calculated move aimed at creating a “convenient distraction.”
“Such narrative only exposes a troubling preference for distortion over genuine solutions,” he added.
The lawyer warned that this alleged pattern of “selective outrage and misdirection” is a key reason why insecurity continues to worsen, insisting that Nigeria cannot achieve peace without confronting uncomfortable truths and holding enablers accountable.
His comments come amid ongoing controversy over the government’s classification of IPOB and the persistent attacks linked to insurgent groups operating in different parts of the country.
As insecurity deepens, the remarks are expected to further intensify national debate over Nigeria’s counter-terrorism strategy and the government’s handling of internal security challenges.
