President John Mahama of Ghana has sparked widespread reactions after openly declaring that he prays every day for Nigeria to succeed—warning that failure in Africa’s most populous nation could push millions to seek refuge in neighboring countries.
Speaking at the African Heritage Awards 2026, Mahama emphasized that Nigeria’s stability is not just a domestic issue but a regional security concern with far-reaching consequences.
“If Nigeria does well, Ghana does well,” he said.
“When you have cousins—250 million of them—you want them to succeed so one million don’t come drifting into a small country like Ghana.”
In a rare moment of candour, the Ghanaian leader revealed that his concern is deeply personal.
“Every day I wake up, I pray for Nigeria. I say, God, let Nigeria get their act together.”
Mahama also highlighted the strong historical and ancestral ties between both nations, pointing to migration links between Ghana and Nigeria’s Yoruba heritage.
According to him, the destinies of both countries are tightly connected, making Nigeria’s progress critical to maintaining economic balance and security across West Africa.
His comments come amid rising concerns over insecurity, economic hardship, and increasing migration pressures within the region—issues that analysts say often spill across borders when instability hits major nations like Nigeria.
Mahama’s remarks underscore a growing sentiment among regional leaders: that the future of West Africa may largely depend on whether Nigeria gets it right.
