Russian authorities have detained a former journalist on allegations of espionage, intensifying concerns over intelligence operations linked to the ongoing conflict between Moscow and Kyiv.
In a statement on Thursday, Russia’s security agency, the Federal Security Service (FSB), confirmed the arrest of a former freelance contributor to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. The individual is accused of passing sensitive information to Ukrainian intelligence.
According to the FSB, the suspect allegedly cooperated with the Security Service of Ukraine and has been charged with “high treason,” a serious offence under Russian law that carries severe penalties.
Authorities revealed that the man, whose identity has not been disclosed, is a resident of Chita and was born in 1960. Investigators claim he transmitted classified information through the messaging platform Telegram, including details about a local publication and a critical infrastructure facility in the region.
The agency further alleged that the information provided was later used by Ukrainian operatives to carry out cyberattacks, temporarily disrupting operations of local authorities.
Video footage released by the FSB showed masked officers conducting a raid on the suspect’s residence, where several items were reportedly seized, including 21 memory devices and two mobile phones. The footage also captured officers informing the suspect of his legal rights.
So far, there has been no official response from Ukrainian authorities or from Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty regarding the allegations.
The FSB used the development to issue a stern warning, stating that anyone collaborating with what it described as enemy forces would be identified, prosecuted, and face severe punishment.
This latest arrest underscores rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine, as both nations continue to accuse each other of espionage and cyber warfare amid the prolonged conflict.
