A shocking wave of violence has rocked Imande-Dem community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, where four persons were brutally murdered over alleged witchcraft accusations.
The victims—an elderly man, his two sons, and another young resident—were reportedly gunned down during a late-night attack around 2:00am on Tuesday, plunging the community into fear and tension.
According to local sources, the incident was triggered by accusations linking the elderly man to the recent death of a youth in the village. The deceased had been scheduled for burial on Wednesday before the situation escalated.
A resident, who spoke anonymously, revealed that suspicion and anger had been building among some community members, who accused the elderly man of being responsible for mysterious deaths.
“They claimed he was behind several deaths in the community through witchcraft,” the source said.
Recounting the horrific incident, the source explained that suspected attackers stormed the man’s compound in the early hours of the morning.
“A woman noticed their movement and raised alarm. A young man who came out was immediately shot. The attackers then chased the elderly man and his two sons as they tried to escape and killed all three,” the source narrated.
The killings have since sparked outrage and fear, with residents calling for justice and demanding accountability from those who made the allegations.
Reacting to the development, the Chairman of Guma LGA, Maurice Orwough, strongly condemned the act, describing it as gruesome and unacceptable.
During a visit to the affected community, he expressed sympathy to the bereaved families and ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident.
The chairman has also directed security agencies to track down and prosecute those responsible, warning against jungle justice.
“Taking the law into your hands only worsens the situation and threatens peace in our communities,” he stated.
He further urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement, assuring that measures are being put in place to restore order and protect lives.
