The Government of Ghana has announced a landmark decision to grant visa-free entry to all African nationals, in a bold move aimed at deepening continental unity and economic cooperation.
The announcement was made by President John Mahama, according to a statement released by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa.
Under the new policy, which takes effect on May 25—celebrated annually as Africa Day—Africans will be able to travel to Ghana without requiring a visa.
The declaration was made during the official state visit of Emmerson Mnangagwa to Ghana, highlighting the country’s renewed commitment to Pan-African ideals.
Speaking on the development, Ablakwa described the initiative as a significant step toward positioning Ghana as a hub for African integration, tourism, and trade. He noted that the visa-free regime will form part of a broader e-visa policy set to be launched by the Mahama administration.
“Ghana seeks to consolidate its credentials as the cradle of Pan-Africanism,” the minister stated, expressing optimism that the reform would boost intra-African movement and economic activity.
He further revealed that since 2025, the government has successfully negotiated 23 visa waiver agreements to improve global travel access for Ghanaian citizens.
