The House of Representatives has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the alleged killing of eight unarmed women—including a 13-year-old girl—during a peaceful protest in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State. The incident, reportedly involving military personnel, has sparked outrage and heightened tension across the affected communities.
The directive followed an urgent motion raised on Wednesday by Rep. Kwamoti Laori (PDP–Adamawa), who warned of an alarming escalation of violence in Lamurde, an area already grappling with insecurity driven by bandits, kidnappers, and terrorist groups.
According to Laori, the women were part of a peaceful demonstration when soldiers allegedly opened fire, killing eight and injuring more than 30 others. Many of the wounded are said to be receiving treatment at hospitals in Numan and the Yola Specialist Hospital.
He described the incident as a “tragic and unacceptable assault” on innocent civilians, adding that it echoes similar military-related killings reported in Dong, Kodomti, Lawaru, Nzuruwe, and Shaforon communities in 2017—cases that saw no meaningful investigation or justice.
“We strongly condemn the killing of unarmed civilians. It is inhumane, unjustifiable, and a gross violation of fundamental human rights,” Laori said, warning that failure to act could further deepen community grievances and trigger unrest.
In response, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas instructed the Committees on Human Rights, Defence, and Internal Security to immediately proceed on a fact-finding mission to Lamurde and report back within two weeks.
The House also mandated the Committee on Legislative Compliance to ensure enforcement of the resolution. Lawmakers observed a minute of silence in honour of the victims.
