“Terrorists Burn Catholic Church in Taraba: US Lawmaker Warns of Escalating Attacks on Christians”

By SUNTV Global Channel – March 6, 2026

A United States lawmaker has strongly condemned the reported burning of a Catholic church in northeastern Nigeria, raising alarm over what he described as a growing wave of violence targeting Christians in the country.

Republican Congressman Riley M. Moore took to X (formerly Twitter) on Friday to react to reports that terrorists set fire to St. Mary’s Cathedral in Wukari, Taraba State. Quoting the Bible, Moore wrote:

“Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

He added that in times of rising attacks on Christians, the words of Christ remain a source of comfort.

Moore highlighted that Christians in Nigeria continue to face violence because of their faith. “Recently, terrorists burned down St. Mary’s Cathedral in Wukari, Taraba State,” he noted.

The lawmaker also pointed to the United States’ designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over religious freedom issues and emphasized that the U.S. cannot ignore the ongoing violence. “We won’t stand idly by as Christians continue to face this violence,” he wrote.

Nigeria has in recent years faced repeated security challenges involving armed groups, bandits, and insurgents. Religious leaders and international organizations have frequently raised concerns about attacks on places of worship and vulnerable communities.
