Abuja, March 6, 2026 –
The Nigeria Police Force has yet to appoint a substantive Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO) following the sudden removal of Benjamin Hundeyin, barely six months after he assumed the role in September 2025.
Hundeyin, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, was relieved of his duties amid internal restructuring that followed Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu’s, appointment as the 23rd IGP by President Bola Tinubu.
Sources within the Force headquarters in Abuja told SUNTV Global on Friday that while discussions for a replacement are ongoing, no official appointment has been made.
Reports earlier suggested that Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Aliyu Giwa could be the next FPRO. Giwa, who previously served as Assistant Force PRO at the Obalende, Lagos police annex from 2017 to 2022, currently works as a cybersecurity specialist at the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre.
However, insiders clarified that Giwa has not been officially appointed and is presently limited to managing the Force’s social media operations, not serving as the spokesperson.
“By virtue of Giwa’s current position, he is close to bloggers, so he is trying to use them to influence the decision,” said a top police source. “The Police Force PRO has not been appointed yet. The role is expected to go to a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), in line with the Force’s communication structure.”
Hundeyin’s removal follows broader leadership adjustments across the police hierarchy since Disu assumed office as IGP. Before his tenure as Force PRO, Hundeyin was the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command.
As of press time, police authorities have not issued an official statement on Hundeyin’s successor, leaving the position effectively vacant while consultations continue.
