Tension flared in Rivers State early Friday after suspected political thugs reportedly set fire to a ward office of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ubima, the hometown of former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi.
The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning in Ubima community, located in Ikwerre Local Government Area, just hours before Amaechi was scheduled to formally register with the ADC at the ward office.
Residents who spoke to SUNTV Global Channel said the attackers stormed the party office and set the building ablaze, destroying party materials and other items inside the facility. The fire reportedly consumed key documents and equipment belonging to the party.
Some community sources alleged that the suspected thugs were loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, a long-time political rival of Amaechi. Both men previously served as governors of Rivers State and have remained influential figures in the state’s political landscape.
“This happened very early in the morning. The attackers came and set the ADC ward office on fire ahead of Amaechi’s planned registration today,” a resident told reporters.
The incident has heightened political tension in the community as supporters of both camps react to the development.
Despite the destruction of the building, no casualties were reported at the time of filing this report.
Amaechi, who previously served as Nigeria’s Minister of Transportation, is widely regarded as one of the most influential political figures from Rivers State and his planned move to the ADC has attracted significant attention in the state’s political circles.
Meanwhile, efforts to obtain an official response from the Rivers State Police Command proved unsuccessful. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, initially asked that inquiries be sent via text message before ending the call.
As of the time this report was filed, the police command had yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
