“Political Drama Or Reality?” — Wike Blasts Obi, Atiku, Amaechi Over ‘Sympathy Campaigns’

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has launched a sharp attack on key opposition figures, accusing them of staging what he described as “political theatrics” to win public sympathy ahead of future elections.

Speaking during his monthly media chat in Abuja on Monday, Wike specifically criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, and former Rivers governor Rotimi Amaechi, alleging they were engaging in symbolic acts they never practised while in office.

According to the FCT minister, such gestures are designed to appeal to struggling Nigerians rather than reflect genuine concern.

“I saw Peter Obi, I saw Atiku, I saw Amaechi going to campaign. What Amaechi did was to buy corn — a corn he had never chewed as a minister or even as a governor,” Wike said.
“You like to deceive the poor, but you never ask yourself: when I was in this position, was I doing that?”

Wike also took aim at Peter Obi’s recent visits to internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, questioning why such engagements were not visible during his time as governor.

“Today he is attending birthday parties and visiting IDP camps. When he was governor, mention one IDP camp where he did that,” Wike stated.
“Nigerians are tired of politicians who come out just to play to the gallery.”

The minister also renewed his criticism of FCT Senator Ireti Kingibe, insisting she would not return to the National Assembly in 2027 due to what he called a lack of visible projects.

“Let her show one project. Performance, not rhetoric, determines electoral success,” he said.

Kingibe, elected in 2023, has previously accused Wike of ignoring her communications on insecurity and infrastructure challenges in Abuja, including persistent water shortages affecting residents.

Wike concluded that future elections would be determined by tangible project delivery rather than political messaging, maintaining that Nigerians are becoming more focused on results than campaign symbolism.
