Kuwait’s air defence systems have successfully intercepted a massive wave of Iranian missiles and drones targeting the country, authorities confirmed on Sunday, as tensions across the Gulf region continue to spiral following recent military strikes on Iran.
In an official statement, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Defence said its Air Defence Force detected and neutralised 97 ballistic missiles and 283 drones launched from Iran toward Kuwait since the outbreak of the latest hostilities.
The ministry’s spokesperson, Colonel Saud Abdulaziz Al-Otaibi, disclosed via the Kuwait Army’s official X account that all threats were intercepted in accordance with established military engagement protocols.
Although most incoming projectiles were destroyed mid-air, officials noted that falling debris struck scattered facilities, causing minor material damage in some locations. No casualties have been reported.
Authorities urged residents to rely strictly on verified official sources and avoid spreading rumours or unconfirmed information.
Conflict Spreads Across Gulf States
The attempted strikes on Kuwait come in the aftermath of coordinated air raids by United States and Israel targeting sites inside Iran, including locations in Tehran. The attacks reportedly killed several top Iranian figures, among them Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
In response, Iran launched retaliatory waves of missiles and drones aimed primarily at U.S. military installations across the Gulf.
Explosions were reported near the U.S. Fifth Fleet headquarters in Manama, Bahrain, while key American bases were also targeted in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
The attacks triggered widespread panic across Gulf cities, with sirens blaring and plumes of smoke visible near several military facilities.
Fears Of Wider Regional War
Security analysts warn the escalation could draw more Gulf states into the conflict, as many host significant American military assets despite not being directly involved in the initial strikes.
The situation has heightened global concerns about a potential large-scale regional war, with diplomatic efforts now intensifying to prevent further escalation.
