The Youth Rights Campaign (YRC) has called for the immediate prosecution of former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, following his recent removal from office by President Bola Tinubu.
In a strongly worded statement released on Friday, the group also warned the acting IGP, Tunji Disu, against sustaining what it described as a long-standing culture of impunity within the Nigeria Police Force.
Signed by its National Coordinator, Adaramoye Michael Lenin, and National Secretary, Francis Nwapa, the statement welcomed Egbetokun’s removal but insisted that it was not enough without full accountability for alleged human rights violations during his tenure.
According to the YRC, it had consistently demanded Egbetokun’s exit, accusing him of undermining democratic rights and creating an environment that allegedly encouraged police brutality against activists and protesters.
The group specifically referenced incidents during the 2024 #EndBadGovernance protests, alleging that several protesters were killed, unlawfully detained, and tortured by officers under his leadership.
YRC also accused Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Jimoh Moshood, of direct involvement in violent actions against activists and called for his immediate dismissal, alleging that policing in Lagos had deteriorated under his watch.
While acknowledging the leadership change, the organisation stressed that genuine reform within the police system would only come through transparent investigations and prosecutions.
It urged acting IGP Disu to reopen cases of alleged abuses carried out under previous police leadership and to ensure credible and open inquiries.
“Mere words cannot end impunity in the police force. Concrete action is needed to restore public trust,” the statement said.
The group further called on Nigerian youths, workers, and labour organisations — including the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress — to intensify pressure for accountability and an end to police brutality nationwide.
