ANAMBRA, NIGERIA —
Troops under the Joint Task Force South-East have launched a major offensive against a suspected separatist stronghold in Anambra State, killing one alleged militant, arresting others, and dismantling what authorities described as a key operational base.
According to security officials, the coordinated operation involved personnel from the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Security sources said the assault targeted the notorious “Mother Valley,” an area authorities identified as a long-standing hideout of suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing.
The operation reportedly took place on Thursday after troops advanced for more than three hours through rugged terrain in what officials described as a high-risk mission.
In a statement released after the raid, the task force said troops encountered heavy resistance during the advance.
“The combined forces demonstrated exceptional courage and professionalism, penetrating and dominating the valley despite fierce resistance,” the statement said.
During the confrontation, suspected militants allegedly fired heavily at the advancing troops and deployed improvised explosive devices in an attempt to halt the operation.
Despite the resistance, security forces said they overpowered the group, killing one suspected fighter while others escaped with gunshot wounds.
Officials said the operation significantly disrupted the group’s defensive positions and weakened its operational capacity.
Security operatives reported recovering several items from the site, including:
- Two pump-action guns
- One locally fabricated firearm
- One tear-gas launcher
- Gas cylinders and electronic equipment
- Flags linked to separatist propaganda
Authorities also recovered two vehicles allegedly connected to the group — a Kia saloon car and a Toyota Sequoia SUV.
Troops reportedly destroyed key infrastructure inside the valley, including what they described as the group’s “Supreme Headquarters.”
Security officials said solar installations, power supply equipment, and other support structures were dismantled to prevent the area from being reused.
In a related development, security operatives confirmed the arrest of two suspected members during an ambush operation.
One suspect was apprehended while allegedly attempting to plant an explosive device, while the second was accused of spying on troop movements.
Both suspects are currently in custody undergoing investigation and profiling.
Security Operations Ongoing
The task force said troops are continuing aggressive clearance operations across the region to prevent criminal groups from regrouping.
Authorities assured residents in Anambra State of sustained security presence while warning armed groups that there would be no safe haven for violent activities.
“There will be no hiding place for criminal elements,” the statement declared. “Our forces remain resolute and committed to restoring lasting peace.”
