Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a sweeping political move that has significantly reshaped the state’s political landscape.
The governor announced his defection on Friday during a statewide broadcast from Yola, stating that the decision followed extensive consultations with political stakeholders and was aimed at aligning the state with the federal government led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to Fintiri, the move was not a personal decision but a collective political realignment involving his cabinet members, elected officials, and the entire political structure that brought him to power.
He disclosed that all 21 local government areas, 226 ward structures, and political appointees in the state have joined him in moving into the APC.
The governor described the defection as a strategic step intended to ensure long-term stability, development, and stronger federal collaboration for Adamawa State.
The development comes shortly after a major shift in the Adamawa State House of Assembly, where the Speaker and 14 lawmakers resigned from the PDP earlier in the week, effectively giving the APC majority control of the 25-member legislature.
Sources within the state government confirmed that several commissioners and top political appointees have already aligned with the governor’s decision.
However, Adamu Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, is not part of the defection.
With Fintiri’s exit, the PDP’s control of state governments nationwide has further declined, leaving only three PDP governors remaining in office.
Political observers say the growing wave of defections across the country could weaken opposition politics and tilt Nigeria toward one-party dominance if the trend continues.
Governor Fintiri, in his address, reassured citizens that governance would remain uninterrupted, promising continued investment in infrastructure, education, youth empowerment, and job creation regardless of political affiliation.
The defection marks a significant turning point in Adamawa politics, especially given Fintiri’s history of defeating APC candidates in both the 2019 and 2023 governorship elections before now joining the ruling party.
