The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama has struck out a three-count forgery charge against Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Mike Ozekhome, after the Federal Government withdrew the case.
The charge, originally filed on January 16 by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), alleged that Ozekhome forged documents in connection with a property dispute in the United Kingdom.
On Tuesday, Rotimi Oyedepo, counsel to the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, moved to withdraw the prosecution. Oyedepo explained that the AGF’s office needed time to review and consolidate issues involving multiple investigating agencies to strengthen the case. Following the application, Justice Peter Kekemeke struck out the suit.
Ozekhome had been accused of presenting forged documents, including a Nigerian international passport, to support his claim over a property at 79 Randall Avenue, London NW2 7SX, during proceedings before the London First-Tier Tribunal.
The property dispute involved the late retired Lieutenant-General Jeremiah Useni and parties identified as ‘Mr Tali Shani’ and ‘Ms Tali Shani’. Ozekhome claimed he received the property as a gift from ‘Mr Tali Shani’ in 2021. However, the tribunal found that the documents submitted by the Shani parties were fraudulent, concluding that neither “Mr” nor “Ms” Tali Shani existed, and that the actual ownership linked back to Useni under a false name.
With the case now dismissed, Ozekhome is no longer facing any charges in the matter, ending a legal saga that has drawn national attention.
