The French government has barred U.S. Ambassador to France, Charles Kushner, from meeting members of the French government after he failed to appear for a ministry summons on Monday, diplomatic sources confirmed.
The summons followed controversial remarks by Kushner regarding the death of French far-right activist Quentin Deranque, who was beaten to death last week in a clash with alleged hard-left activists—a case French media have likened to “France’s Charlie Kirk moment.”
“Following the publication of comments on a tragedy that concerns our national debate, which we refuse to allow to be exploited, Ambassador Kushner was summoned to the ministry. He did not show up,” a source said.
The U.S. Embassy and the State Department’s Bureau of Counterterrorism have stated they are monitoring the situation, cautioning that “violent radical leftism is on the rise” and represents a public safety concern.
This is the second time Kushner has ignored a formal summons. In August 2025, he failed to attend a meeting to explain his remarks on the rise of anti-Semitic incidents in France, which French authorities viewed as critical of their handling of domestic affairs.
Diplomatic sources emphasized that the current restriction is about protocol. “Ambassadorial access is contingent on respecting official summons. This measure reflects France’s insistence on proper diplomatic conduct,” a source said.
While the U.S. Embassy has not publicly commented, French officials stressed the ban will remain until Kushner demonstrates adherence to standard diplomatic procedures. Analysts warn that continued public commentary by foreign diplomats on sensitive domestic matters could strain Franco-American relations further.
The French Foreign Affairs ministry reiterated that access restrictions are standard in cases of repeated non-compliance and called on all foreign representatives to exercise restraint to preserve national debates.
