Operatives of the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested eight additional suspects and impounded six trucks allegedly used for illegal mining activities along the Ilorin–Ogbomoso corridor linking Kwara State and Oyo State.
According to a statement released by the anti-graft agency on Monday, the arrests were carried out on Saturday, February 20, 2026, following actionable intelligence and days of covert surveillance on suspected illegal mineral excavation and transportation routes in the area.
The EFCC disclosed that the operation brings the total number of suspects apprehended by its Ilorin Zonal Directorate to 18 within the last one month, underscoring an intensified crackdown on illegal mining networks operating in the region.
The suspects were intercepted in possession of six truckloads of assorted minerals believed to be lithium and kaolin—resources currently in high demand both locally and on the international market.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly operated without valid mining licences, permits, or regulatory approvals, in clear violation of Nigeria’s mining laws and established regulatory framework.
The commission stated that investigations are ongoing and assured that the suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of inquiries.
