Residents of Gwana District in Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State have fled their homes in large numbers following a surge in deadly bandit attacks that has left the once-busy settlement nearly deserted.
SUNTV Global gathered that the worsening insecurity has created a climate of constant fear, forcing families to abandon their houses, farms, livestock, and personal belongings in a desperate bid to stay alive.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that villagers were seen hurriedly packing their possessions, loading mattresses, food items, and household goods onto motorcycles and vehicles as they prepared to leave the troubled district.
Residents say repeated attacks and persistent threats from armed groups have made normal life impossible. Many lamented that nights have become especially terrifying, with communities unable to sleep due to fear of sudden raids.
Locals also blamed the crisis on the absence of adequate security presence, noting that the lack of protection has emboldened criminal elements to operate freely.
The mass displacement has severely disrupted farming and economic activities in the area, with many families now seeking refuge in neighbouring communities and other states, relying on relatives for shelter and survival.
Several displaced residents expressed uncertainty about their future, saying they do not know when — or if — they will be able to return to their homes.
