The Nigeria Police Force and Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, have reportedly failed to comply with a Federal High Court judgment directing them to pay ₦30 million in damages to activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore over his controversial “wanted” declaration.
Sowore, publisher of SaharaReporters, disclosed the development on Monday, accusing police authorities of disregarding a valid and subsisting court order.
The Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, had ruled that the police acted unlawfully when they declared the activist wanted in October 2025, describing the action as a violation of his fundamental rights. The court subsequently awarded ₦30 million damages against the police.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Musa Kaakaki held that the declaration carried out under CP Jimoh was illegal and unconstitutional.
Reacting after the ruling, Sowore described the decision as a strong rebuke against what he called persistent police abuse of power.
According to him, the judgment sends a clear message that public officials who misuse authority will be held accountable.
The case is linked to the October 2025 “wanted” notice issued by the police, which sparked outrage among civil society groups and rights advocates who described it as politically motivated.
Sowore also alleged that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, had previously sought legal maneuvers to shield the police from accountability.
Despite the court’s ruling and subsequent warnings, Sowore says the police have yet to obey the directive to pay the damages.
The activist praised his lawyer, Barrister Tope Temokun, for what he described as steadfast representation throughout the legal battle.
The latest development marks another chapter in Sowore’s long-running confrontations with Nigeria’s security agencies, while raising fresh concerns about compliance with court orders by law enforcement authorities.
