Fresh waves of violence have struck communities in Niger State after suspected bandits killed a resident and abducted his wives during a late-night raid in Rijau Local Government Area.
Local sources revealed that the attackers stormed Dukku town on Friday night, targeting the home of Abubakar Gari. The gunmen reportedly shot him dead before abducting his wives and fleeing to an unknown destination.
Security analyst Bakatsine disclosed that Gari was laid to rest on Saturday according to Islamic rites. However, shortly after the burial, the kidnappers contacted the family, demanding a ransom of N50 million for the safe release of the women.
Residents said the gunmen left behind Gari’s infant child, who is still breastfeeding — a move many believe was intended to pressure the family into quickly paying the ransom.
The incident has intensified fear across Rijau LGA, where kidnappings and deadly attacks have become increasingly frequent.
When contacted by SaharaReporters, the Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said he was still verifying the report and could not confirm details at the time of filing.
More Attacks In Borgu
In a separate but related development, suspected terrorists also attempted to invade Maje village in Borgu Local Government Area on Friday night, setting several houses ablaze before being repelled by local vigilantes.
According to local accounts, the attackers struck under the cover of darkness but were forced to retreat after resistance from community defense groups.
The attempted invasion follows a series of coordinated attacks across Borgu communities over three days. Reports indicate that gunmen killed at least 26 residents in multiple villages, destroyed property, and even burned down a police station before fleeing into nearby forests.
Many affected communities have since been deserted, with residents fleeing to safer locations.
Locals are now calling on security agencies and government authorities to urgently strengthen protection measures and prevent further bloodshed across the region.
