Chaos broke out at a ward collation centre in Garki, Abuja, on Saturday evening after party agents openly confronted officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over alleged irregularities in the handling of councillorship election results.
SUNTV Global Channel gathered that the dispute began when party representatives accused electoral officials of refusing to allow them to verify figures announced for the councillorship contest — a process they said had earlier been permitted during the chairmanship results collation.
A viral video shared by News Central TV captured the tense moment as the situation quickly turned rowdy, with heated arguments between party agents and INEC officials at the centre.
According to eyewitness accounts, agents had peacefully cross-checked figures for the chairmanship race before results were declared. However, tensions escalated when electoral officials allegedly announced councillorship results without granting agents access to verify the numbers against their own records.
The move immediately sparked protests, with several party representatives accusing INEC of abandoning due process and undermining transparency in the collation exercise.
One visibly angry agent was heard challenging officials during the confrontation.
“Sir, we disagree with these final figures. Let’s confirm them with our records. You allowed us to check during the chairmanship collation, so why deny us now?” the agent insisted.
The disruption adds to mounting concerns surrounding the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections, which have been marked by complaints of procedural disputes, alleged irregularities, and low voter turnout in several polling areas.
Meanwhile, results released by INEC show the All Progressives Congress (APC) has so far secured three of the six chairmanship seats declared, winning in AMAC, Bwari, and Kwali Area Councils.
In AMAC, APC candidate Christopher Maikalangu polled 40,295 votes to defeat his closest rival from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) finished third.
Similarly, in Bwari Area Council, APC candidate Joshua Ishaku emerged victorious with 18,466 votes, ahead of ADC and Zenith Labour Party contenders.
With two chairmanship results still pending, political observers say the tensions witnessed at the collation centre highlight growing mistrust among stakeholders and underscore the need for transparency in the ongoing electoral process.
