Fresh tension is mounting in Ebonyi State as Governor Francis Nwifuru has vowed to impose stringent measures on the Amasiri community following its failure to meet a controversial 72-hour ultimatum linked to a gruesome killing.
Speaking after a State Security Council meeting at the Government House in Abakaliki, the governor expressed strong dissatisfaction over the community’s inability to produce the severed heads of victims killed during the deadly attack in Okporojo, Oso-Edda.
The violent incident, which left four people killed and beheaded, is believed to be connected to a long-standing boundary dispute between neighbouring communities in Edda Local Government Area.
Governor Nwifuru warned that the expiration of the ultimatum without compliance would attract tough consequences, stressing that the state government would not tolerate continued violence or obstruction of investigations.
Although authorities have relaxed the earlier curfew imposed on Amasiri — now restricting movement between 6pm and 7am — schools in the area remain shut due to ongoing security concerns.
The governor also assured residents that suspects already arrested in connection with the killings would be prosecuted in court.
Meanwhile, the situation has triggered allegations of heavy-handed operations by the Nigerian Army. Residents claim many youths and adult men have been detained during security raids, leaving parts of the community largely deserted.
In a viral social media video, a female resident alleged that mass arrests have heightened fear among villagers, deepening anxiety amid the security crackdown.
Earlier measures by the state government included dissolving the traditional and political leadership of Amasiri as part of efforts to restore order.
With tensions still high, attention is now focused on how authorities and community leaders will resolve the crisis and prevent further escalation.
