A former Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Bola Tinubu, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has delivered a scathing assessment of the administration, warning that Nigeria could face even tougher times if the president secures re-election in 2027.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Tuesday, Baba-Ahmed said the country’s situation has deteriorated significantly since he left government service.
According to him, there has been no visible improvement in governance indicators, as insecurity, poverty, and hardship continue to rise across the nation.
“I haven’t seen any improvement in the records of President Tinubu since I left,” he said. “On the contrary, I have seen a deterioration. The nation is more insecure, and levels of desperation and poverty are more pronounced.”
He further criticised what he described as over-reliance on political alliances as a strategy for re-election, calling it “poor thinking,” and warning that Tinubu “will make an even worse president if he returns to power.”
The criticism comes amid escalating security challenges nationwide. Recently, President Tinubu publicly commended National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu during an official visit to Adamawa State.
The president praised Ribadu as “honest, bold, courageous and committed,” expressing confidence that Nigeria would eventually defeat bandits and terrorists under his leadership.
However, the commendation has sparked debate, as many communities across the country continue to face deadly attacks, kidnappings, and destruction of property.
Residents in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State recently raised alarm over a prolonged bandit assault that reportedly lasted more than 10 hours, leaving settlements destroyed and many people displaced.
Witnesses said homes were burned, casualties recorded, and no immediate military response was visible during the attack.
The violence reportedly spread to multiple communities including Konkoso, Pissa, Zango, and Tungan Makeri, where residents said attackers moved from town to town, killing civilians and setting properties ablaze.
In a separate incident, suspected terrorists also launched a fresh attack on Share town in Kwara State, further highlighting ongoing security concerns.
Baba-Ahmed’s remarks reflect widening political tensions as debates intensify over the Tinubu administration’s performance and prospects ahead of the next presidential election cycle.
With insecurity and economic hardship dominating public discourse, analysts say the administration faces mounting pressure to demonstrate tangible improvements in governance and national safety.
