Tension gripped residents of Share, the headquarters of Ifelodun Local Government Area in Kwara State, on Sunday after heavily armed bandits launched a fresh attack on the community, triggering a fierce gun battle with security forces.
Local sources told SUNTV Global Channel that the attackers stormed the town in large numbers, but were immediately confronted by forest guards and soldiers, who engaged them in an intense exchange of gunfire to prevent the takeover of the area.
A resident described the situation as critical, saying security operatives were “fighting relentlessly” to repel the assailants and protect civilians.
Attack Comes Hours After Kidnap Incident
The latest assault occurred barely 24 hours after suspected terrorists attacked Kakafu community in Patigi Local Government Area, where four residents were abducted during an early-morning raid.
Witnesses said the gunmen fired sporadically to create panic before whisking their victims away to an unknown destination.
Earlier Ambush Leaves Soldier, Vigilante Injured
Security sources also revealed that bandits had, a day earlier, ambushed vigilantes and community guards at a checkpoint along Gamji Road in Gbugbu.
During that attack:
- A soldier sustained a gunshot wound to the leg.
- A vigilante member suffered a severe head injury.
Both victims were rushed to a nearby medical facility for emergency treatment.
Growing Fear Across Kwara Districts
Residents say repeated attacks across Kwara North and Kwara South senatorial districts have heightened fear, with communities facing rising cases of kidnappings, ambushes, and armed incursions in recent months.
Many locals are now calling for stronger and sustained security operations to prevent further escalation.
