The Israeli military says it has killed a fighter it accused of taking part in the deadly October 7, 2023 assault, along with a senior commander of Islamic Jihad, in ongoing operations in Gaza.
In a statement on Sunday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Ahmad Bayouk — described as a member of Hamas — was targeted after intelligence linked him to the infiltration of the Re’im military base during the October 7 attack in southern Israel.
According to Israeli authorities, Bayouk had continued operating in Gaza after the assault, allegedly working to rebuild militant capabilities and coordinate further attacks against Israeli troops before he was eliminated in a recent strike.
In a separate operation, Israeli forces also confirmed the killing of Azem Abu Huli, identified as the head of Islamic Jihad’s Nukhba unit in Gaza’s Central Camps area. Officials said he played a key role in procuring weapons and overseeing militant training activities.
The October 7, 2023 attack saw Hamas fighters cross from Gaza into southern Israel, killing about 1,200 people and taking roughly 250 hostages — an event that triggered Israel’s declaration of war.
Since then, Israel has carried out sustained air and ground operations across Gaza, targeting militant infrastructure but also causing widespread destruction to civilian areas.
Palestinian health authorities say tens of thousands of people have been killed during the conflict, including many women and children, while large parts of Gaza’s infrastructure — including homes, hospitals, and utilities — have been severely damaged.
Meanwhile, Palestinian civil defence officials reported that at least nine people were killed in fresh Israeli airstrikes on Sunday across northern and southern Gaza.
Medics said one strike hit a tent camp sheltering displaced families, killing four people, while another attack in Khan Younis reportedly left five dead.
The war continues to fuel a worsening humanitarian crisis, with shortages of food, medical supplies, and safe shelter affecting hundreds of thousands of displaced residents across the enclave.
