The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on the National Assembly to immediately remove what it described as “discretionary” provisions in the recently passed Electoral Amendment Bill, warning that such clauses could threaten the credibility of future elections in Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party expressed concern that the Senate’s version of the bill allows manual recording of election results as an alternative to electronic transmission in cases of network failure.
According to the party, this flexibility introduces loopholes that could be exploited to manipulate election outcomes.
ADC noted that it initially welcomed reports that lawmakers had approved real-time electronic transmission of results, but later findings revealed controversial clauses that weaken the guarantee of mandatory e-transmission.
The party stressed that credible elections require clear and firm legal provisions, not discretionary measures that create room for ambiguity.
It warned that any uncertainty surrounding the collation and transmission of results would erode public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.
“Any provision that introduces ambiguity or technical loopholes in the transmission of election results fundamentally undermines electoral integrity,” the statement said.
The ADC therefore urged lawmakers to urgently review the bill and ensure that the final version aligns with earlier recommendations reportedly calling for compulsory real-time electronic transmission of results without exceptions.
Reaffirming its commitment to electoral transparency, the party stated that it would continue to advocate for reforms that guarantee credible, verifiable, and trustworthy elections.
