Jos, Plateau State — Residents of Kabong community in Jos North Local Government Area are raising alarm over the shocking state of their only primary healthcare centre, warning that the deteriorating facility now poses a serious danger to pregnant women, children, and other vulnerable groups.
This was revealed during an inspection visit by civic accountability group Tracka, which described the Kabong Primary Health Centre (PHC) — serving more than 2,500 residents — as being in a deplorable and unsafe condition.
According to the findings, the health centre remains the first and often the only point of medical care for many families in the area. It provides essential services including antenatal and postnatal care, child immunisation, malaria treatment, family planning, and basic laboratory tests, making it a critical lifeline for low-income residents.
However, what should be a safe haven for healthcare has now become a source of fear and frustration.
Tracka’s report revealed that parts of the facility’s roof are collapsing, ceilings have fallen off, and the building leaks heavily during rainfall. Health workers reportedly place buckets inside treatment rooms to collect rainwater during downpours, disrupting medical services and exposing patients to additional health risks.
The structure also shows deep cracks, deteriorating walls, and lacks a proper waste-disposal system — conditions experts warn could endanger both patients and healthcare staff while undermining the quality of care.
Community members expressed disappointment, saying they feel neglected by authorities despite reports of substantial government allocations to the health sector. Many residents now travel long distances in search of better healthcare, while others resort to self-medication — a practice that significantly increases health risks, especially for pregnant women and young children.
Reacting to the situation, civic tech organisation MonITNG described the condition of the PHC as evidence of a gap between public health funding and actual service delivery.
The group called on Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, Jos North federal lawmaker Hon. John Christopher, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, and the Federal Ministry of Health to urgently rehabilitate and upgrade the facility.
MonITNG warned that without immediate intervention, the deteriorating centre will continue to put lives at risk.
“The people of Kabong deserve safe, accessible, and dignified healthcare services,” the organisation stated.
