Human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the Africa Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has joined the #OccupyNASS protest under the banner of the National Opposition Movement (NOM) at the National Assembly, Abuja. Sowore warned security operatives against any attempts to suppress the peaceful demonstration.
Addressing the gathering, Sowore condemned the recent removal of key provisions from the Electoral Act, describing it as a deliberate attempt by the political elite to undermine credible elections.
“This is not a new struggle. The provisions were deliberately removed, and this exposes the fear the ruling class has of free and fair elections. These people cannot win under transparent conditions,” Sowore said.
While noting ongoing debates about electronic transmission of election results, Sowore called for more fundamental reforms. “My focus is not just on electronic transmission, because what gets transmitted can already be manipulated. I am advocating for electronic voting. Whatever system Nigerians believe can protect the integrity of their votes, we must defend it,” he stressed.
Sowore also reminded security agencies of their constitutional role to protect citizens, not intimidate them. “Security agents are meant to maintain law and order, not attack peaceful protesters. I have warned them—any aggression will have consequences they cannot predict,” he said.
Describing himself as a revolutionary, Sowore dismissed incremental reforms. “I’m not for baby steps. Only radical change can solve Nigeria’s political problems,” he asserted.
He added that the protest reflects a growing political consciousness among Nigerians. “When we arrived here, you could feel the awakening of giants—silent revolutionaries realizing the power of collective action,” Sowore said.
The activist urged Nigerians to continue organizing and demanding accountability, emphasizing that democratic change requires unity and sustained engagement.
