The Osun State Police Command has arrested the Imam of Ummu Hanni Adigun Memorial Central Mosque in the Ogo-Oluwa area, alongside three other worshippers, over the death of a congregant, Najeem Hammed, after a violent incident during early morning prayers.

SUNTV Global gathered that the tragedy unfolded shortly after 6:00 a.m. when Hammed allegedly attempted to attack the Imam with a microphone stand while a sermon was ongoing. According to residents and members of the congregation who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons, the attack followed Hammed’s anger over a sermon he reportedly believed was directed at him.

Eyewitnesses said Hammed missed the Imam, who fled the scene in fear, prompting other worshippers to restrain Hammed.

“He got up suddenly and moved toward the Imam with the microphone stand,” one witness told SUNTV Global. “He missed him. The Imam ran away, and some worshippers seized Hammed, dragged him outside the mosque and beat him.”

The incident was subsequently reported at the Ataoja Police Division, where officers responded and evacuated Hammed, who had sustained serious injuries, including open wounds. However, his condition reportedly worsened while in custody, and he was rushed to a hospital, where he was later confirmed dead.

Following news of Hammed’s death, tension escalated in the community as his family members and friends reportedly stormed the mosque during Jumaat prayers, threatening worshippers and causing panic.

Confirming the development, Osun State Police Command spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, said four suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident and that a full investigation was underway.

“The incident occurred this morning shortly after 6 a.m. Four suspects have been arrested. The Divisional Police Officer and other tactical teams have been deployed to the area to maintain law and order. The corpse has been deposited at the Osun State Teaching Hospital,” Ojelabi said.

The police assured the public that all those found culpable would be prosecuted, while calling for calm as investigations continue.

SUNTV Global Channel will continue to monitor developments and bring verified updates as the story unfolds.
