Osbourne Umahi, son of Nigeria’s Minister of Works and former Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, has joined the race for the chairmanship of Ohaozara Local Government Area under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The 27-year-old politician reportedly obtained the party’s nomination and expression of interest form over the weekend, priced at ₦30 million, a figure that has continued to spark public criticism.
Osbourne Umahi was accompanied by a large crowd of supporters to the APC state secretariat in Abakaliki, where he was formally received by members of the party’s State Executive Committee led by the state chairman, Stanley Okoro-Emegha, according to reports by The PUNCH.
Speaking at the event, Okoro-Emegha described Umahi as an intelligent and enterprising young politician, expressing confidence in his ability to transform the fortunes of Ohaozara Local Government Area if elected.
Addressing party members, Osbourne Umahi thanked the people of Ohaozara for what he described as their trust and support, pledging not to betray the confidence reposed in him. He said his administration, if elected, would focus on youth empowerment, stressing that young people remain the backbone of sustainable development. He also promised to sustain what he called his father’s legacy of infrastructural development across the local government area.
The APC local government primaries in Ebonyi State are scheduled for January 25, 2026.
The development comes amid sustained controversy over the APC’s decision to peg the chairmanship nomination form at ₦30 million, a sum many Nigerians have described as excessive, especially when compared to the national minimum wage of ₦70,000 per month.
On Saturday, APC Ebonyi State Chairman Stanley Okoro-Emegha briefed journalists in Abakaliki after a closed-door meeting with party officials from across the state. According to BusinessDay, the meeting involved the party’s 13 local government chairmen as well as 171 electoral ward chairmen and secretaries.
Emegha said the meeting was aimed at familiarising party executives with upcoming APC programmes and ensuring effective communication across all levels of the party’s structure ahead of future political activities in the state.
David Umahi, Osbourne’s father, currently serves as Nigeria’s Minister of Works, having been appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and sworn into office on August 21, 2023.
