Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has reaffirmed his leadership of the coastal state, vowing to uphold peace, protect lives and property, and support initiatives that promote the state’s development.
The governor made the declaration on Saturday while attending the 2026 Port Harcourt Polo Tournament Finals in the state capital, highlighting the tournament’s smooth execution as evidence of Rivers State’s safety for residents, investors, and visitors.
“What is important is that I am still the governor of Rivers State, and we will continue to do what we have promised the Rivers people,” Fubara said, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to maintaining public order.
Fubara expressed satisfaction that the week-long polo event concluded without incidents, calling the peaceful atmosphere a reflection of the government’s effective management.
“I am happy that you had your tournament for one week, and the president of the Port Harcourt Polo Club told me there was no incident. It shows that we are working and that Rivers State is safe. That is the basic responsibility of government,” he stated.
While praising the tournament’s success, the governor noted his disappointment with recurring political crises in the state, which he said have repeatedly coincided with the annual polo event over the past three years.
“It is really unfortunate that each time you are having your tournament, there is always one problem. In 2024, January was hell. In 2025, you didn’t bother to come to me. This 2026, which I thought would be the finest, just landed me a love letter,” he lamented.
Despite these challenges, Fubara reassured Rivers residents and stakeholders of his administration’s commitment to supporting genuine efforts toward the state’s progress. He also pledged plans to upgrade the Port Harcourt Polo Club, widely regarded for its top-class natural grass polo pitch.
The governor encouraged participants, including international polo players from India and Argentina, to enjoy the serenity of Port Harcourt and promote positive narratives about the state.
Dignitaries at the event included the Argentine Ambassador to Nigeria, alongside players and officials from across the country, showcasing Rivers State as a safe and welcoming destination for sports and tourism.
