At least four residents have been killed as armed bandits launched a renewed and deadly attack on Wawa community in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, leaving homes and a church razed and families displaced.
The attack, which occurred on Friday evening, reportedly targeted Damala village, located behind the Woko–Daba mining sector, according to local reports.
Community sources said the assailants struck suddenly between 8:00pm and 8:30pm, killing four people on the spot and rustling all livestock belonging to villagers. The stolen animals were reportedly herded into the surrounding forest after the raid.
“The attackers came suddenly. Before anyone could react, people were already dead, houses were on fire, and our animals were gone,” a resident who narrowly escaped the attack told reporters.
Witnesses said the bandits also set ablaze a church and several residential buildings, causing extensive destruction of property and forcing many residents to flee for safety.
“This is terrifying,” another villager said. “We are living in constant fear. These attacks keep happening, and there is no security presence. People are no longer safe going to their farms or even to church.”
Residents described the assault as swift and brutal, noting that the community was left completely exposed due to the absence of security personnel at the time of the attack.
Following the incident, residents renewed calls for urgent intervention by both the Niger State Government and the Federal Government, urging the deployment of adequate security forces to Borgu and surrounding communities.
“We are pleading with the authorities to come to our aid,” said Comrade Zakari Y. Adamu, a community leader from Kontagora. “If nothing is done, these attacks will continue and more lives will be lost. We need security now to protect our people and our property.”
The latest incident highlights the worsening security situation in rural Niger State, particularly in forested and mining areas, which have increasingly become hotspots for violent attacks.
“The bandits know these areas are poorly secured, and they exploit that,” a source familiar with local security dynamics said. “If urgent action is not taken, more communities will suffer similar attacks.”
The renewed appeal from residents reflects growing frustration and fear, underscoring the need for immediate and sustained security measures to protect vulnerable communities across Niger State.
