Tragedy struck parts of Kano State on Wednesday as a two-year-old boy and a 28-year-old man lost their lives in separate drowning incidents involving uncovered wells, officials have confirmed.
The first incident occurred in Kwankwaso town, Madobi Local Government Area, where a two-year-old boy, Sa’idu Ahmad, drowned after falling into a well.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Thursday, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, said the Service received an emergency call at about 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
“We received an emergency call from the Deputy Director of the Fire Service, Rabiu Garba, at about 12:15 p.m., reporting that a boy had drowned in a well. Our rescue team was immediately dispatched to the scene,” Abdullahi said.
He explained that the child was recovered from the well unconscious and was later handed over to the Madobi Police Division through Umar Shehu, adding that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
In a related incident the same day, a 28-year-old man, Suleiman Sani, also lost his life after falling into a well in Karofawa Yan Kifi Village, Ghari Local Government Area of the state.
According to Abdullahi, a distress call was received at the Ghari Fire Station on Wednesday evening, prompting the immediate deployment of rescue personnel.
“Our rescue team quickly mobilised to the scene. The victim was rescued unconscious but was later confirmed dead by his parents,” he said.
The deceased was subsequently handed over to the Village Head of Karofawa, Alhaji Musa Aliyu, while investigations into the cause of the incident continue.
The Kano State Fire Service expressed condolences to the families of the victims and urged residents to take safety precautions.
“We appeal to the public to ensure that wells are properly covered to prevent such tragic and avoidable occurrences,” the Service advised.
