President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Dr Olugbemisola Titilayo Odusote as the new Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, making history as the first woman to head the institution since its establishment in 1962.
The appointment was confirmed in a State House press release issued on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. According to the statement, Odusote’s tenure will take effect from January 10, 2026, and will run for four years.
Dr Odusote, 54, currently serves as the Deputy Director-General of the Nigerian Law School and Head of the Lagos Campus. She will succeed Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma, whose eight-year tenure as Director-General ends on January 9, 2026.
Distinguished Academic and Legal Career
A seasoned legal scholar and administrator, Odusote earned her Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988. She later obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from the same institution, specialising in Company and Commercial Law.
Her academic journey continued in the United Kingdom, where she earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law from the University of Surrey. She also served as a visiting scholar at Nottingham Trent University, further strengthening her international academic exposure.
Rising Through the Ranks
Dr Odusote joined the Nigerian Law School in 2001 as a lecturer and steadily rose through the ranks. Over the years, she has held several strategic positions, including Head of the Academic Department, Director of Academics, and Head of Campus, roles that have shaped policy, curriculum development and institutional management.
She has published extensively in respected local and international law journals and has presented scholarly papers at numerous legal education conferences within and outside Nigeria. Her service also extends to key professional bodies, having served on various committees of the Council of Legal Education and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
New Chapter for the Nigerian Law School
As Director-General, Dr Odusote will provide overall academic leadership and administrative oversight for the Nigerian Law School across its campuses nationwide. She will also be responsible for setting the institution’s strategic direction and serving as the principal link between the Law School and major legal bodies, including the Council of Legal Education, the Body of Benchers, and the NBA.
Her appointment has been widely welcomed as a landmark step for gender inclusion and institutional continuity in Nigeria’s legal education system, marking a new chapter in the history of the Nigerian Law School.
