No fewer than 18 persons, including children, have lost their lives in a devastating road traffic accident along the Dutse–Kwanar Babaldu highway in Jigawa State.
SUNTV Global Channel gathered that the fatal crash occurred on Tuesday and involved three vehicles after a Volkswagen bus conveying passengers reportedly suffered a tyre burst while in motion.
According to eyewitness accounts, the tyre burst caused the driver of the Volkswagen bus to lose control, resulting in a head-on collision with another vehicle approaching from the opposite direction. Moments later, a truck ploughed into the two vehicles, crushing them and worsening the impact.
Confirming the incident, the Jigawa State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Umar Matazu, described the accident as sudden and catastrophic.
“A fatal accident occurred along the Dutse to Kwanar Babaldu route involving three vehicles,” Matazu said. “A Volkswagen bus conveying passengers had a tyre burst, lost control and collided with another vehicle coming from the opposite direction. Unfortunately, a truck ran into the two vehicles and crushed them.”
He disclosed that preliminary reports indicated heavy casualties.
“So far, 18 people have been confirmed dead. The victims include adult males, females and children,” the FRSC commander added.
Emergency responders, including FRSC officials and security personnel, were immediately deployed to the scene to rescue survivors and clear the highway. Injured victims were rushed to nearby hospitals for medical attention, while the remains of the deceased were evacuated.
The FRSC has once again urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on any journey and to strictly observe speed limits, stressing that many road crashes are avoidable with proper safety measures.
SUNTV Global Channel extends condolences to the families of the victims and calls for increased road safety awareness to prevent further tragedies.
