President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reassured Nigerians that his administration’s ongoing overhaul of the nation’s security architecture will soon yield tangible results capable of restoring public confidence, despite persistent attacks across parts of the country.
The President gave the assurance on Friday while hosting a delegation of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), led by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, at his Lagos residence. The meeting was disclosed in a statement issued by presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga.
Tinubu acknowledged the scale of Nigeria’s security challenges, particularly the vast ungoverned spaces exploited by bandits and insurgents, but insisted that the situation remains under control.
“The mood of the nation is peaceful, although our ungoverned spaces are so large. The challenge is real, but we will surmount it,” the President said.
He called on religious leaders to support government efforts through prayers, vigilance and cooperation, stressing that some security initiatives require time before producing visible outcomes.
“We are very religious people. We are prayer warriors. We need your focus, vigilance and cooperation,” Tinubu added.
The President reaffirmed his commitment to security sector reforms, including the planned introduction of state and community policing to better respond to emerging threats nationwide. He noted that the initiative would become operational once the National Assembly concludes the necessary legislative processes.
Tinubu also explained that delays in acquiring military hardware had affected public perception of the government’s security drive, pointing out that such equipment is expensive and not easily accessible. He revealed that Nigeria has ordered four attack helicopters from the United States and is engaging Turkey for additional security support.
Despite the guerrilla-style tactics of bandits and insurgents, the President maintained that restoring peace and stability across the country remains a top priority for his administration. He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, referencing the recent abduction and subsequent release of schoolchildren in Niger and Kebbi states.
However, even as the President spoke, insecurity persisted in parts of the country. SaharaReporters reported that suspected bandits on Friday evening invaded Adanla community in Igbaja Ward 2, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, abducting seven residents and injuring several others, just a day after Christmas.
A source told SUNTV Global Channel that the attack occurred around 7pm, plunging the usually peaceful community into panic, grief and mourning, as the gunmen stormed the area in large numbers, firing sporadically while forcefully entering homes and carting away their victims.
