The Nigerian Army has confirmed that the explosion which rocked Gamboru Market in Maiduguri on Wednesday evening, December 24, 2025, was caused by a suspected Boko Haram suicide bomber.
According to the Joint Task Force, North East, under Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), the attacker detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) within the busy market area, killing himself and two civilians instantly at the scene.
Security sources disclosed that troops of Operation Hadin Kai, working alongside the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, other security agencies, the Borno State Government, and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), responded swiftly to the incident. The affected area was immediately secured and cordoned off to prevent further casualties and ensure public safety.
Victims of the blast were promptly evacuated to the Maiduguri General Hospital and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for urgent medical treatment.
In total, 32 civilians sustained varying degrees of injuries in the attack. Sadly, two of the injured later died at the hospital, bringing the civilian death toll to four, while two others remain in critical condition. Medical officials confirmed that the remaining victims are stable and receiving adequate care.
Following the incident, troops and other security agencies have intensified patrols, surveillance, and security operations across Maiduguri and its environs to forestall further attacks, especially during the yuletide season.
The military has urged residents to remain calm, vigilant, and security-conscious, and to promptly report any suspicious movement or objects to security authorities.
Operation Hadin Kai expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and reassured the public of its unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property across the North-East.
